Transform Your Notes with LiveScribe

By Kim Roach · June 6, 2007

It looks like an ordinary pen, but it’s features extend well beyond the ink.

Livescribe is developing a new pen that captures whatever you write or draw with it. The pen is also equipped with two microphones to record everything it hears while you’re writing.

Here comes the cool part - double tap on a word you’ve written in your notes and the smartpen will automatically replay the portion of audio at the exact point in which the notes were taken. It does this through sophisticated visual sensors that track tiny dots on the paper in order to track which spots in the lecture match the same point in the notes you took. Unfortunately, this does require the smartpen to depend on it’s own unique paper.

The smartpen also allows students to view and listen to their notes on their PC. They can even search through their notes by keywords.

Students can then email their written and audio notes to your classmates.

However, the features don’t stop there. You can also translate words and phrases simply by writing it on paper. The smartpen allows you to download a number of different languages to your pen computer.

If you’re a blogger, you can write blog posts into your notebook and post them automatically to your blog.

Create and send email messages to your friends. The livescribe smartpen allows you to write and send messages directly from your notebook. You can send your messages to your Facebook profile or even post it up on MySpace.

What’s really interesting about the Livescribe smartpen is that they’re allowing their userbase to create their own software and continuously add new features.

This pen looks to be the perfect tool for students. Really anyone who takes a lot of notes is sure to find this to be a dream tool.

Just think of how useful it would be for journalists and bloggers as well.

If you’re looking to get your hands on this innovative new pen, you can watch for it’s release sometime this fall. However, all this techy goodness does come with a price… somewhere around $200.

However, I think it will probably be well worth it to have a pen that turns your paper into a virtual workspace.

This pen is set to create new ways to learn, work, and communicate.
