Learn to Speed Read with Spreeder

By Kim Roach · May 15, 2007

Have you ever wanted to learn how to speed read? I know I sure have. Just the thought of being able to speed through books gets me excited. Just think of all of the information you could absorb and the many new things you could learn.

Well, I have found an excellent tool for learning to speed up your reading. It’s called Spreeder, an online speed reading application that forces you to read faster.

Simply copy any text that you want to speed read and paste it into the speeder.com text area. After that, you just click the play button and begin reading. By default, speeder is set up to display one word at a time at 300 wpm (words per minute). However, you can customize the settings to change the words per minute, chunk size, window width, window height, font size, font color, background color, and alignment.

As stated on the Spreeder website,

“Several factors affect our reading speed, like subvocalization (the little voice inside our heads that reads along with us and slows us down), backtracing (rereading parts over and over again), etc. The purpose behind apps like these is to train our minds to get rid of all the other crap. So, by having a steady input of text, we erase our dependency on backtracing. By increasing the reading speed, subvocalization can’t keep up and eventually goes away… we don’t need to subvocalize to process information, as much as we may think we do.”

They also provide a number of plugings, including a bookmarklet that lets you copy text and instantly load it into spreeder.

Overall, I think this is a very cool tool and I will be using to start speed reading through some of my daily reading requirements.
